The post-partum period is a difficult one to navigate when it comes to your wardrobe. You might be feeling self-conscious about your body with a few extra pregnancy pounds to lose, and your pre-pregnancy clothes may still be pretty snug. While style obviously won’t be number one on your agenda, it’s still important to feel confident and comfortable in what you wear.
Wear Pretty Underwear
Your underwear is the foundation of your outfit, so it’s important that your bras fit well and you feel sexy and secure in what’s underneath your clothes. It’s easy to find pretty nursing bras these days, so look around instead of resorting to frumpy, plain options. Shapewear can also be worn underneath your clothes to hold in a fourth-trimester tummy (ideal for if you’ve just had a c-section and need support around the scar) and give you a smoother silhouette.
Opt for Drapey Cuts
Tight, form-fitting clothes are probably not your friend at this point, so wear loose, draped tops and dresses that conceal your stomach without clinging. Empire-waist dresses, maxi dresses, tunics and ruched tops are all perfect for making you feel stylish again without leaving you feeling uncomfortable and over-exposed.
Make Use of Your Maternity Clothes
If there were a few pieces that you wore during pregnancy and loved, there’s no reason that you can’t continue to wear them now. Cinch in maternity dresses with waist belts and make good use of stylish items that still work on your post-partum body. If you have maternity clothes that are way too big or have expandable waistbands, pass them on to a pregnant woman who could use them.
Avoid Baggy Bulk
It can be tempting to cover your body up with baggy, bulky clothing if you’re feeling self-conscious, but these styles are rarely flattering. Work with the body you have now to show off your positive features, and remember – you’re a new mom! You just brought life into the world, so celebrate your body rather than hiding it away.
